Breathtakingly beautiful natural scenery When I visited the "Blue Pond" in the town of Biei, I was truly left speechless. Dead larch trees stood amid a mysterious cobalt-blue water surface that looked as if paint had been dissolved into it, and I remember losing track of time as I gazed at it. The vast lavender fields of Furano, spreading out like a purple carpet across the landscape, also offer the overwhelming scale that only Hokkaido can provide. Romantic townscapes and one of the world's top three night views In the port town of "Hakodate," lined with historic red-brick warehouses, and "Otaru," where gas lamps glow along the canal, just walking around puts you in a very romantic mood. The night view looking down from the summit of Mount Hakodate was especially beautiful—the city lights sparkling against the unique topography where the sea presses in from both sides—it was so stunning it gave me goosebumps.

Planning for the scale and travel times beyond imagination What surprised me most when traveling around Hokkaido was simply how "long the travel distances are." Even if places look close on a map, going from Sapporo to Hakodate, for example, takes nearly four hours even by express train.
